B Walk – Hathersage (Doug Davies Memorial Walk)
September 29 @ 10:15 am
As a ‘one off’ as well as the normal B walk there will be a shorter one to allow more of Doug’s friends who no longer are regular B walkers the chance to join in.
Programme Walk – Alan
The walk starts from the main car park in Hathersage (see notes on parking in Hathersage below) (GR SK 232814). It’s about 9 miles, although it might feel a bit more by the time we’ve finished. The route takes us from the centre of Hathersage up on to Stanage Edgeby way of Brookfield Manor, along the edge to Upper Burbage Bridge, along the top of Burbage Rocks, down to a packhorse bridge across the Burbage Brook, up the other side of the valley narrowly missing Carlwark, up to Higger Tor, and back to Hathersage by way of Callow and Toothill Farm. If anyone then wants/needs to get straight back to the car I will lead back into the centre of Hathersage by way of the churchyard and Little John’s grave. All those who wish to conclude in the traditional way of these memorials by gathering in the pub will peel off just before the churchyard to the Scotsman’s Pack and return to the cars by the road (or via the churchyard if they fancy a quick late sprint uphill).
Car parking in Hathersage.
The main car park where we start has a pay and display machine with a charge of £6 per car per day BUT this is rarely functioning. If it is working it takes coins or cards. There is in theory an option to pay by phone but others who have tried it say that that does not work either. I suggest you go armed with a note for the dashboard saying “machine not working” or similar. Alternatively there is parking rather further away at the rail station. This is marked “for rail users only” and has a pay machine that seems to be permanently wrapped up. There are a small number of places by the roadside not having double yellow lines on the station approach and on the road immediately across the B6001 road from the station approach. If all this is too much for you, you could always go by rail if the trains are working.
Shorter Alternative – Frank
This is a 7.5 mile moderate walk starting from Hathersage Station, (GR SK234809) turning left out of Station Road to Leadmill Bridge, Oxley Wood, Owler Tor, Burbage Brook, Higgar Tor and from there the route is the same as Alan’s. We might be lucky enough to meet up but if not then we’ll meet at Scotsmans Pack for a drink.
As we may get more out, if at all possible please car share to cut down on parking.
Thank you and hope to see a good turnout on Thursday.
