DESCRIPTION:Peel Tower and Holcombe Moor\, 7.5 miles approx! \n\n\n\nMeeting at 10am for a 10:15am start \n\n\n\nLumb Lane car park\, Lumb Lane\, \n\n\n\nHolcombe \n\n\n\nBury. BL8 4NN \n\n\n\nIt’s about 25 miles and takes approx 40 mins drive. \n\n\n\nFrom your location\, take the M60 anticlockwise.After passing Jn19\, Middleton\, make your way into the 2 outside lanes. There are some motorway road works at this junction but it hasn’t caused me any problems so far.Take the motorway split into the M66\, Bury/Burnley/BlackburnDrive along the M66 to Jn1 (I think it’s the 3rd exit counting the Pilsworth park and ride)Exit at Jn 1\, Ramsbottom A56.Follow this up to the T-junction and turn right. This is Manchester Rd.Follow this road to the 1st set of traffic lights and left turn onto Bury New Rd\, B6214.Follow this road all the way through Ramsbottom going over the railway lines at the East Lancs railway through the village. Still staying on this road go up towards Holcombe village\, it’s a bit narrow in places so be careful\, keep on this road and drive up through Holcombe village passing The Shoulder of Mutton pub on your left. Turn left here and then just after you leave the village drive down to the car park which is on your left. There is a brown sign on the right stating “Peel Tower”. This is a free car park\, but no toilet facilities. \n\n\n\nWe will walk around the base of the moor on National Trust land and good paths\, though can be rocky at times\, making our way up towards Red Brook where we will stop for coffee. Then carrying on passing Quarlton Heights where we will climb up onto Black Moss which will take us up to the trig point at Bull Hill. This is not as steep as it sounds and at the trig point we will have lunch. From there we will walk down to Beetle Hill and round to Pilgrims Cross. From there it’s down then up over Harcles Hill and onwards to Peel Tower. From there it’s a short lane back to down to the cars\, but a very rubbly one\, and the car park. \n\n\n\nWe can go for a drink after the walk in the Shoulder of Mutton if you wish! \n  \n\n\n\n7.5 miles\, moderate

Some uphill climbs.Directions from Marple BridgeTake the Glossop Road A626 for 3.9 miles to Charlesworth.At the George Hotel turn left onto Long Lane .Follow this Road through Broadbottom and Mottram for approx 3 miles. Ahead at the traffic lights in Mottram village to the mini roundabout and take the first exit towards Stalybridge. A6018.After 0.6 miles turn right into Hobson Moor Road.Follow this lane for approx half a mile\, KEEPING LEFT at forks in the road.We will park on the lane before the no through road sign.There are other routes through Hyde\, which maybe more convenient for you.Hope to see you there and the weather stays kind to us.

DESCRIPTION: Sunday D Walk: Hulmes Wood and Reddish Vale 5 miles \n\n\n\nMeet at Arden Arms\, Ashton Road\, Bredbury \, SK6 2RY at 9.45 am to walk at 10.0 am \n\n\n\nThe walk is up Turner Lane (a bit rocky and\, if it rains\, muddy) to the Arden Bridge over the River Tame and then we walk along the river through Hulmes Wood to cross the road into Reddish Vale. We follow the river through the fields to go under the  M60 motorway and the Victorian viaduct to reach the reservoirs and visitors’ centre. There are toilets at the visitor centre and good coffee and tea is available.  From there we follow the Trans Pennine Trail along a gradual ascent to cross over the motorway and join Stockport Road to return to the Arden Arms.  It is ‘high’ summer so brambles and nettles are high and\, though we have been busy with secateurs\, it is best to wear long trousers. \n\n\n\nRoute to Arden Arms from Brabyns Hill car park \n\n\n\nTurn left out of the car park and follow that road(A626) through Marple\, down Dan Bank to turn right at the traffic lights into Dooley Lane (A627) past Dobbies Garden Centre. Keep on this road through two sets of pedestrian lights to reach the traffic lights at the crossroads at the top of Barrack Hill where you turn left. \n\n\n\n Follow this road left until you reach the traffic lights at the T junction where you turn left but then take the right lane past Morrisons to turn right at the lights at The Travellers Call into Ashton Road (A560) towards Denton.  As you approach the roundabout keep right so you are placed to keep straight on (A6017). Under the railway bridge as you near the lights\, watch the markings on the road to keep right. Down the zigzag hill and at the bottom is the Arden Arms on the right. \n\n\n\nThe landlord has given us permission to park in the carpark on the understanding we have a drink at the end of the walk. It is a small carpark so it would be considerate if we gave lifts – I can take two passengers and my house is on the way so you could park here. \n\n\n\nI would appreciate it if you would let me know if you intend to join me. \n

The walk will start from Grindleford Station\, Upper Padley\, Grindleford\, S32 2JA. \n\n\n\nDirections \n\n\n\nThe easiest way to get to Grindleford Station is as follows: \n\n\n\n\nTake the A6 towards Chapel en le Frith\n\n\n\nAt the Chapel roundabout\, turn left on to the A623 towards Chesterfield\n\n\n\nAfter passing through Stony Middleton\, take the left turn (A625) at the Calver traffic lights\n\n\n\nImmediately after the lights\, bear left again on to the B6521\n\n\n\nFollow the road through the village of Grindleford and as you leave the village\, the road to the station is on the left-hand side.\n\n\n\n\nOther information \n\n\n\nThere is parking on the approach road to the station. The car park is 0.25miles further East along Bakestonedale Road. \n\n\n\nThe walk is 9.5miles starting at Andrews Knob\, then Harrop Wood\, Saddle Cote\, Kettleshulme\, Sweet Hill and back to the car along the side of Sponds Hill.It’s a nice walk with good views. DESCRIPTION:This walk is a relatively flat and just under 7 miles with 3 gentle ascents along the route and there is no stiles.  From the pub car park\, we follow the Weaver Navigation to reach Saltersford Locks where we will have our coffee break. We then leave the river for our first ascent to join the Trent and Mersey Canal which we follow to go above the Saltersford Tunnel for our second ascent. We then follow country tracks and our third ascent to reach the village of Little Leigh and then descend to rejoin the canal which we follow to pass the outskirts of Bartington. We continue along the canal for a while before taking our lunch break on a bridge over the canal. We then descend a gentle hill to rejoin the Weaver Navigation which takes us back to the pub. \n\n\n\nFor those wishing to walk a shorter distance of just under 5 miles\, there is a turning off the canal taking you back the pub. Please be aware that this is before the planned lunch stop. \n\n\n\nWe will meet in the car park of the Leigh Arms pub\, which is located at Warrington Road\, Northwich CW8 4QT at 10.15am for a 10.30am start. We have permission to use their car park so if the chain is across the entrance\, then just move it. Toilets may be available at the start of the walk. \n\n\n\nAfter the walk\, drinks are available at The Leigh Arms pub for those people wishing to stay for a drink. \n\n\n\nDirections to the Leigh Arms Pub (Warrington Road\, Northwich CW8 4QT): \n\n\n\nThe quickest way is to use the M56 which is about 30 miles and should take about 45 minutes to drive. \n\n\n\n\n\n7 miles\, moderate

DESCRIPTION:Meet at Fairholmes Visitor Centre S33 0AQ at 10.15 am to walk at 10.30 am along the Lost Villages Trail round the higher reservoir. It is an easy walk with no stiles and one flight of steps. \n\n\n\nRoute to Fairholmes  (your GPS might tell you Jubilee Cottages but it is the same) \n\n\n\nThe distance is approx. 23 miles but allow yourself a good hour because you will be driving through Glossop and Hollingworth over The Snake Pass. This is why I’m making it a later start than usual. \n\n\n\nFrom Brabyns Hill carpark turn right to go through the lights and up the Glossop road (A626) and follow it all the way through Charlesworth to Dinting T-junction where you turn right onto the A57 \n\n\n\nFollow the A57 through Glossop all the way to the Lady Bower Valley and as you approach the dam there is a sign on the left to Derwent Valley. Turn left. Follow that road past the Fairholmes 1 mile sign all the way to the visitor centre though you might have to park in one of the layby carparks outside. \n\n\n\n Carparking is £6.60 all day by card or cash (despite Ring Go sign you’d be lucky to get a signal)

There are a couple of lay-by’s before this location that would require a short walk. When I recced the the walk on a wet midweek day there was plenty of parking. Please only park in the designated parking areas. Parking on verges may get you a fine. The walk is around 10 miles with 1885ft of ascent. \n\n\n\nThe walk will take us up onto The Roaches ridge. We will then pay a visit to Lud’s Church before a second ascent of The Roaches. From there we make our way across pleasant countryside on our way to Ramshaw Rocks and a return to our transport. \n  \n\n\n\n10 miles\, moderate / strenuous

DESCRIPTION:Park at High lane village hall car park which is just before the A6 on Windlehurst Road 10.00 for a 10.15 start. \n\n\n\nWe will walk through the estate to Andrew Lane and then take the road up to the water works turning right on to a track which leads to the road. A short way along the road we will turn right through the wall and walk down to the Goat farm over a couple of fields. From there we go across Disley golf course and down onto the A 6. Form here we make our way back to High Lane village along several tracks.  Hopefully not much mud!  Around 6-7 miles and fairly easy\, not many stiles. \n  \n\n\n\n7 miles\, moderate

DESCRIPTION:My walk begins from The Sportman pub\, Kinder Road SK22 2LF.  Meeting at 10.15 for a 10.30 start. There is parking on the roadside near to the pub\, gathering outside the pub to begin. \n\n\n\nThe distance is nearer to 6 miles.  There are two uphill sections and two small streams to cross. DESCRIPTION:this week the walk is Cavedale in Castleton\, Moderate mixed terrain\, under 7 miles\, a few stiles\, with some gates. \n\n\n\nMeeting 9.45 for a 10am start at Odin Mine\, go down Winnats Pass road towards Castleton\, past Speedwell Cavern at the end of the road there is a giveway line and a sharp left onto Old Mam Tor Road\, follow this all the way down\, passed Treak Cliff Cavern\, at the end of the road is Odin Mine\, there is free parking bays after Treak Cliff Cavern upto Odin Mine.  \n\n\n\nThe walk starts from Odin Mine\, up the Broken Road with excellent views of Mam Tor\, arriving at the Blue John Cavern and upto the viewpoint of the valley across Castleton. Then heading over to Winnat’s Head\, we then cross some fields to Slitherstone Mine\, before joining the Limestone Way down into Cavedale with views of Peveril Castle. \n\n\n\nComing out into Castleton village via little lanes (there are toilets available here)\, we then follow the Odin Sitch all the way back to the Odin Mine. \n\n\n\nHow to get there: Nearest Postcode S33 8WP\, Heading to Disley via A6\, Newtown keep right A6 to Furness Vale\, Whitehough\, cont on A6\, across roundabout\, then left for Castleton on Sheffield Road. Road continues as Rushup Edge\, follow round to the right (passed the left turn for Blue John Cavern) then turn Left onto Winnats Pass all the way down to the giveway line and left onto Old Mam Tor Road\, continue all the way to the end of this road\, parking bays after Treak Cliff Cavern are free. Meeting at Odin Mine 10am walk. \n  \n\n\n\n7 miles\, moderate

DESCRIPTION:This week’s walk is NOT the walk listed in the programme.  Some of you will remember me doing that walk\, Pilsbury Castle\, in the previous programme as a substitute for a walk that I withdrew.This weeks walk is called\, Knowl Hill\, it is in memory of a lovely guy called Dougie\, who used to walk with us many years ago.  It’s a walk he led but was unable to to finish\, due to ill health.  I resurrected the walk and the. Group did complete it 12 months after his death.  It’s a great walk and I thought I would lead it again in Dougies memory.The walk is 10 miles and is moderate to easy. Start time 10amThe start of the walk and free parking is on a wide expanse of roadside verge opposite a pub called “Owd Bett’s” on the Rochdale to Edenfield road.  There is plenty of parking space for all.Take the M66 and come off it at Junction 1\, the Ramsbottom\, Edenfield turn off.  At the end of the long slip road turn right and head for Edenfield along the A56.  In the centre of Edenfield turn sharp right back on yourself heading for Norden and Rochdale along the A680.  The pub\, Owd Betts is on the left approximately two miles along the A680.I look forward to seeing some of you there. \n\n\n\n10 miles\, moderate
