DESCRIPTION:this week the walk is Cavedale in Castleton\, Moderate mixed terrain\, under 7 miles\, a few stiles\, with some gates. \n\n\n\nMeeting 9.45 for a 10am start at Odin Mine\, go down Winnats Pass road towards Castleton\, past Speedwell Cavern at the end of the road there is a giveway line and a sharp left onto Old Mam Tor Road\, follow this all the way down\, passed Treak Cliff Cavern\, at the end of the road is Odin Mine\, there is free parking bays after Treak Cliff Cavern upto Odin Mine.  \n\n\n\nThe walk starts from Odin Mine\, up the Broken Road with excellent views of Mam Tor\, arriving at the Blue John Cavern and upto the viewpoint of the valley across Castleton. Then heading over to Winnat’s Head\, we then cross some fields to Slitherstone Mine\, before joining the Limestone Way down into Cavedale with views of Peveril Castle. \n\n\n\nComing out into Castleton village via little lanes (there are toilets available here)\, we then follow the Odin Sitch all the way back to the Odin Mine. \n\n\n\nHow to get there: Nearest Postcode S33 8WP\, Heading to Disley via A6\, Newtown keep right A6 to Furness Vale\, Whitehough\, cont on A6\, across roundabout\, then left for Castleton on Sheffield Road. Road continues as Rushup Edge\, follow round to the right (passed the left turn for Blue John Cavern) then turn Left onto Winnats Pass all the way down to the giveway line and left onto Old Mam Tor Road\, continue all the way to the end of this road\, parking bays after Treak Cliff Cavern are free. DESCRIPTION:This week’s walk is NOT the walk listed in the programme.  Some of you will remember me doing that walk\, Pilsbury Castle\, in the previous programme as a substitute for a walk that I withdrew.This weeks walk is called\, Knowl Hill\, it is in memory of a lovely guy called Dougie\, who used to walk with us many years ago.  It’s a walk he led but was unable to to finish\, due to ill health.  I resurrected the walk and the. Group did complete it 12 months after his death.  It’s a great walk and I thought I would lead it again in Dougies memory.The walk is 10 miles and is moderate to easy. Start time 10amThe start of the walk and free parking is on a wide expanse of roadside verge opposite a pub called “Owd Bett’s” on the Rochdale to Edenfield road.  There is plenty of parking space for all.Take the M66 and come off it at Junction 1\, the Ramsbottom\, Edenfield turn off.  At the end of the long slip road turn right and head for Edenfield along the A56.  In the centre of Edenfield turn sharp right back on yourself heading for Norden and Rochdale along the A680.  The pub\, Owd Betts is on the left approximately two miles along the A680.I look forward to seeing some of you there. \n\n\n\n10 miles\, moderate

DESCRIPTION:Melandra Castle\, 5.25 miles \n\n\n\nMeeting at 10:15 for a 10:30 start \n\n\n\nRoadside parking on Melandra Castle Rd \n\n\n\nSK13 0LU \n\n\n\nFrom your location drive onto the Glossop Rd (A626) from Marple and drive through Chisworth and then Charlesworth heading for Gamesley. After the bend where the road goes over the old railway you will see some shops on your right. Turn left just before those onto Cottage Lane. Don’t turn into Melandra Castle Rd itself which is the first left turn\, take the second one which is Cottage Lane. Drive past the terrace houses till you pass a bus stop and children’s park on your left. Park along this section of road.  \n\n\n\nWe will walk along the Pennine Bridleway and make our way past the Roman Fort of Melandra Castle\, though to be honest there is nothing there to see barring a plaque. Then we make our way onto the Etherow/Goyt Valley way and the Tameside Trail. Then head toward Higher Gamesley and Dinting Vale.  \n\n\n\nThere are 2 uphill ascents ( not too steep) not long after the start\, and one right at the end. Other than that it is more or less flat! \n  \n\n\n\n5.25 miles\, moderate

DESCRIPTION:Seven miles of easy flat walking in the Cheshire countryside\, just south of Altrincham.  Starting from the excellent Axe and Cleaver pub we will take in the Bridgewater Canal\, the Bollin Way\, Dunham Massey Hall and deer park\, and Dunham golf course.   \n\n\n\nThe route will cross four stiles\, plus two ladder stiles with handrails.  We will cross one major road.  There is a very small chance of flying golf balls.  Most of the walk is on good firm tracks and lanes\, but there are a few hundred yards of field paths which can be muddy after recent rain\, so good boots and trekking poles are recommended.  Because of livestock and possibly deer I am afraid that this walk is unsuitable for dogs. \n\n\n\nThe meeting point will be at the Axe and Cleaver pub\, School Lane\, Dunham Massey\, Altrincham\, WA14 4SE.  We will meet at 10am and start walking at 10.15. \n\n\n\nFrom Marple drive to Stockport and join the M60 towards the airport. \n\n\n\nFollow the signs for the airport and merge onto the M56 towards Chester.   \n\n\n\nAfter passing the airport take the exit signed M6 and Altrincham. \n\n\n\nStay in the right hand lane.  At the roundabout take the second exit towards Altrincham. \n\n\n\nAt the next roundabout take the second exit onto the A56 towards Altricham. \n\n\n\nAt the first set of traffic lights turn left onto Charcoal Rd\, B5160. \n\n\n\nDrive until you reach the first turn on the right\, School Lane.  Turn right. \n\n\n\nFollow School Lane until you pass a church on your left.  Shortly after you will see the Axe and Cleaver on your right. \n\n\n\nJust after the pub turn right\, then sharp right again into the car park.  \n\n\n\nPlease park at the far end\, away from the pub.  We will meet there. \n\n\n\nThe pub has kindly given us permission to use the car park.  Please buy a drink after the walk. \n  \n\n\n\n7 miles\, moderate

DESCRIPTION:Meet 10am for 10.15am start. \n\n\n\nPym Chair Car Park\, High Peak (free) \nFollow the A6 to Disley.  At traffic lights turn right along the Old Buxton Road and after less than a mile take a right turn along Mudhurst Lane/Higher Lane. Follow this for 3 miles and take a sharp left turn onto the B5740 towards Kettleshulme.  Just before getting into the village turn sharp right down Side End Lane (signed for Goyt Valley/Saltersford).  Follow this lane for 2 miles (passing Windgather Rocks) and the car park will be on your left just before you get to the T junction at the end of the road. \nRoute Summary: We will walk along good paths over Cats Tor and up tp the trig point at Shining Tor where we will have coffee.  We will continue to the ridge and atake a zig zag and rather stony path deep into the valley and towards Errwood Hall where we will have lunch.  We will then take a long. but quite gentle climb\, along Foxlow Edge on the lower path (passing St Joseph’s shrine) and from there back onto The Street which we follow uphill back to the car park.  The walk is only 6.5 miles but does have a fair bit of ascent/descent. \n\n\n\n6.5 miles\, moderate
