D Walk – Whaley Bridge (Change from programme)

May 2 @ 10:15 am

My chosen walk for Thurs is Whaley Bridge

Starting from the Canal Basin free car park, if this is full please park on the main road and walk down to the start.

Meeting at 10:15 for a 10:30 start.

Walk is approx 5 miles

Starting from the canal basin we will walk along the canal going over 2 bridges then walk up to the road and cross over and make our way over to Hockerley.

From there it’s up through sloping fields and over a number of stiles and wall stiles. There is only one of these that is a bit tricky but the rest are fine.

From there it is a flat walk along fields towards Hawkhurst then down to the road, and across a road again to go down through Slatersbank Wood and down towards Toddbrook reservoir.

We will make our way down to the dam and through the memorial park and along the river path.

From there we need to cross the main road at the crossing to get onto the old railway line making our way back to the start.

I recce’ this walk today (Mon) and although there are still a number of patches of mud it is slowly drying out, and they are fairly negotiable without filling your boots!

I had thought Todbrook Dam would be finished by now…….but no! There is still a lot of work going on there unfortunately.

Right….

From your location drive onto the A6 heading towards Disley. Carry on on the A6 until you reach the first main roundabout at the start of the dual carriageway.

Take the 2nd exit taking you into Whaley Bridge and you will pass Tescos turning on your left and the canal basin is the next left turning. It’s a bit of a hairpin turning so give yourself a wide sweep round.

As I mentioned before, you can also park on the road just before this turning.
