A Walk – Dovestones
November 14 @ 9:45 am
Start time – 09:45 for 10:00 start
Start Point – Binn Green Car Park (OL3 7NL; OS: SE017044, W3W: loose.scatters.irrigate). Please note that Binn Green Car Park isn’t where Google Maps and Waze thinks it is. You need to travel further up Holmfirth Road (A635). Continue past the turning to Dove Stone Reservoir on the right and in approximately half a mile look for brown sign indicating Binn Green car park 150 yds. Turn right into car park and park on the larger lower level of the car park. Although it says it is a Pay & Display car park, the machines were never installed so parking is free.
Description – The planned walk is a 12.5 miles with 2000’ of elevation and is a modification to the classic Dovestone Ridge / Chew Reservoir / Alphin Pike Ridge walk to avoid the very difficult ascent up to Birchen Clough, which isn’t for the faint hearted! The plan is to do a circular walk around Yeoman Hey and Greenfield reservoirs before climbing up onto the ridge. This is ~800’ of constant ascent, so will take it at our own pace and regroup at the top. From there we will follow the Ridge around to Chew Reservoir and then to Alphin Pike before descending down to Dovestone Reservoir via the plantation.
Please note that the path around Yeoman Hey reservoir was closed at the time of all my recces of this route, so I have a plan B where we do the ascent much earlier and route around to the Trinnacles after the climb up onto the ridge. The good news is that this is slightly less mileage and elevation and I’m always open to bribery!
