C Walk – Magpie Mine
July 16 @ 10:00 am
Thursday C Walk 16th July – Meet at 10am for a 10.15 start.
The meeting point is White Lodge Car Park on the A6 before Bakewell. The post code is DE45 1NL (but it covers a large area!). Good to share cars, the parking cost £6.60 for the day.
Directions to the car park:From Buxton take the A6 towards Bakewell. The car park is 7.7 miles from the Morrisons roundabout in Buxton. As you get nearer the road briefly becomes dual carriageway. The road descends after the dual section and the scenery starts to open up on the left. There is a picnic sign and then a bus stop pull in on the left. A few hundred yards past the bust stop there is a turning right into the car park (it is not very well signed). If the first part of the car park is full, go past the ticket machine and there are more spaces and toilets.
The walk is 6 miles, moderate.
Although this is at the short end of our walks there will be 1,000ft of asc/desc to make up for it! We start by going through the steep sided Deepdale and after a short section of road walking cross fields to the ruins of the Magpie Mine. This is one of the best preserved lead mines in the country. We will have lunch here with time to explore for those that haven’t been there before. We then visit Sheldon before descending via Nettler Dale before returning to the car park along (and above!) the River Wye.
The walk is generally easy except for a couple of short sections of the descent and has a sting in the tail when we have to ascend during our final section along the Wye.
It’s a really nice walk and will be even better with good weather. No dogs please. There are a couple of sections where there were a lot of cattle.
> Looking forward to seeing you there.
6.5 miles, moderate
