Founded in 1967!
Yes, last year we celebrated our 50th Anniversary.
We were formed by a small group of keen walkers in the Marple area. One of their earliest objectives was to protect local footpaths and keep them open for posterity. The earliest walks were on Sundays but over the years as people retired and membership grew, Thursday walks were introduced. We are indebted to our founding chairman and committee members for their enthusiasm and commitment in creating our thriving club. We now have over 350 members joining up to 5 grades of walks on Thursdays and 4 grades on Sundays. We also organise group holidays each year in the UK and overseas.
We now look forward to the next 50 years of sociable walking and fun.
Publications
As part of our 50th celebrations the club published a booklet of memorable walks for the pleasure of other ramblers. Contributions include those from our first two chairmen, posthumously re-written walks of special former members, and favourites from many of our current leaders. Copies are on sale at local book and outdoor shops. We also published a 50th anniversary history of the club which was sent to all members. As well as these special publications we publish a printed newsletter “Footprint” and a walks programme 3 times each year.
